Should You Avoid Laser Skin Treatments During the Summer?

The Sun and Your Skin

Vitamin D is a crucial element when it comes to the overall health of your body, and sunlight is a wonderful and natural way to increase its levels. Not to mention, it causes a release of serotonin, the chemical that your brain creates that makes you feel happy! While all of these benefits are great, the reality is, the sun also has the power to do some major damage to your skin if your time spent out in it is not properly regulated.

So, What About Summer?

If you’ve ever received any type of laser skin treatments, such as laser hair removal, IPL photofacials, or even vein reduction, then you know how important it is to avoid direct sun exposure to those treated areas before and after your appointment. You may also know that many of these therapies require multiple treatments in order to render optimal results, which begs the question: “Do you have to put your laser treatments on hold until further notice because you’ll be spending more time outside this summer?” What if we told you that you could continue your laser treatment regiments safely and effectively, even during the summer months?!

To clarify, this is not to say that one lather up of sun block and you’re free to spend all the time in the world under the sun without any thoughts given to your skin. In fact, our aestheticians recommend that you apply a sun block with an SPF of 50 or higher on a daily basis (rain or shine)!

Each of our providers could look you in the eyes and say with confidence that it is just as safe to receive laser treatments during the Summer as it is in the Winter months. You may be wondering what that process looks like, and we’ve

got all the details you need!

Laser Treatments & Summer: How Can They Co – Exist?

Ultimately, your Laser Technician will be able to provide the best advice when it comes to laser therapy, but here are some of the primary basics to keep in mind when scheduling laser hair removal or any other treatments in the Summer:

  1. Plan accordingly. If you know you have a beach vacation or a pool day coming up, do your best to schedule your laser hair removal or other therapy during the months prior so that you don’t have to fret over potential sun burns or over exposure. You’ll want to give yourself a full two – week buffer before and after treatment.
  2. Communicate. Sometimes, it can be tempting not to be totally honest with your LT because you really want to receive treatment, but it’s extremely important to let them know if you’ve had direct sun exposure to the treatment area recently. Your skin is at risk, so be sure to be up front with your LT so that they can help you reschedule your appointment for a more appropriate time.
  3. Wear sunscreen! This one is crucial regardless of when you receive laser treatments. Your skin is your body’s largest organ, and it will be with you for the long haul, so why wouldn’t you protect it?
  4. Limit exposure. When you’re spending a long day out in the sun, consider setting timers or asking those around you to keep you accountable. Take breaks! Find some shade during intervals throughout the day to allow your skin time to heal and escape from the UV rays.
  5. Trust your aesthetician and follow their Instructions. Your It’s A Secret licensed laser technician has undergone countless hours of education and in – house training in order to provide you with the highest level of care. That means they know a thing or two about laser treatments, so be sure to listen carefully and follow their pre and post care guidance.
